Market size and industry location: Traded vs non-traded goods

چکیده

We investigate the importance of market size as a determinant for industrial location patterns. In order to focus on a broad range of sectors, including services, both traded and non-traded goods are taken into consideration. In our model, traded goods industries always exhibit a ‘home market effect’ (HME), whereas the existence of such an effect for non-traded goods crucially hinges on the degree of product differentiation. High degrees of product differentiation generally support a HME, whereas a reverse HME may arise when products are sufficiently close substitutes. Our results are in accord with the observed existence of a market size dependent ‘functional hierarchy’, both within and between countries.  2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. International Migration, Segmented Labour Markets and Competitiveness: Amalgamating the Lewis and Balassa-Samuleson Models

We integrate three hitherto unconnected strands of economic theory; Lewis’ dual economy model, the Balassa-Samuelson model and, segmented labour market theory. With our hybrid model we investigate the implications of migration with labour market segmentation for an economy’s internal competitiveness, where migrants are concentrated in the secondary labour market and this segment supplies unskil...

Promotion of Cooperative Behavior in C2C market: Effect of Reputation Management System

We model an online consumer-to-consumer (C2C) market by employing the prisoner's dilemma. To discuss the characteristics of goods traded on a C2C market, we define temptation and contribution indexes based on the payoff matrix of the game. According to the results of the simulation with the model, we find that a positive reputation management system can promote cooperative behavior in online C2...

Temptation and Contribution in C2C Transactions: Implications for Designing Reputation Management Systems

A reputation management system can promote trust in transactions in an online consumer-to-consumer (C2C) market. We model a C2C market by employing an agent-based approach. To discuss the characteristics of goods traded on the market, we define temptation and contribution indexes based on the payoff matrix of a game. According to the results of a simulation conducted with the model, we find tha...

Are estimated departures from the law of one price exaggerated by the bundling of non-traded and traded inputs into observed prices?

Two celebrated facts are these: that fluctuations in the terms of trade are long-lasting. And that fluctuations in the terms of trade account for large portions of the variation in the overall real exchange rate, even at long horizons. Our paper explores one simple argument: if observed traded goods prices are really a weighted sum of traded and non-traded goods, and fluctuations in the relativ...
